Program for Problematic Sexual Behaviors

I always thought I would divorce my husband if he had an affair but I don’t want my marriage to end. Is it possible to recover from something like this and have a good marriage?

It felt like the world stopped when I discovered pornography on our family computer. What do I do now?

Is it cheating if it was all online? I don’t even know how to label what has happened but I feel so hurt and betrayed.

I feel like we’re in the Groundhog Day movie and we keep reliving the same situation over and over and over again. How can we break this pattern?

If your marriage has been devastated by affairs, sexual addiction, or problematic sexual behaviors of any kind, it can be so overwhelming and you can feel so lost. Figuring out solutions at a time when you are in excruciating pain is too hard and sometimes simply impossible. When your world has been turned upside down, you need to lean on someone who knows what to do. That’s why Relationship Solutions created a program to support couples struggling with problematic sexual behaviors. This program guides hurting couples through the initial fallout and upheaval that happens when an addiction or affair is discovered and helps them establish the stability necessary for recovery and rebuilding to occur.

Program Specifics

  • Online and available wherever you are
  • 8 weeks long
  • 8 individual sessions for partner struggling with problematic sexual behaviors
  • 4 individual sessions for betrayed partner
  • 8 support group meetings for betrayed partner
  • Access to our team for ongoing support and care during the program
  • Coordination for additional counseling or support upon completion of the program

What we have learned in our experience working with couples suffering from sexual trauma and betrayal is there is an initial period of chaos and distress that can be very complicated and disorienting. During this time, both partners are struggling to feel secure in the relationship and this can lead to confusing push-pull dynamics along with a lot of walking on eggshells. This can be the most tumultuous time filled with shock, confusion, and uncertainty. Our program is especially helpful in this time when you are struggling to establish stability and safety. Without this kind of security, the work of restoration is difficult to do. For eight weeks, our team will meet with both partners in a structured way that supports their respective struggles. Individual sessions, support group meetings, and ongoing staff access help couples begin to create a new version of normal where they feel steady enough to dig deeper into their individual issues and their relationship challenges. What are problematic sexual behaviors?

Problematic sexual behaviors can include unwanted, uncontrollable sexual behaviors, one-night stands, ongoing affairs, compulsive pornography use, and high risk sexual behavior that places you and/or your partner in danger. If your sexual behaviors are causing distress to you, to your partner, and to your relationship then we consider it problematic and you may be a good candidate for this program. As our work together progresses we can help you define the nature of your individualized issue more specifically. A mistake some people make is to delay seeking help until the problem has been accurately identified. We have learned that clarity comes as you do the work and rarely is present before the work has started.

Why should I consider this program instead of traditional weekly counseling?

We believe in the value of weekly outpatient counseling very much and we offer it at our Fort Smith counseling office as well as online. Weekly counseling is certainly one approach that helps couples and individuals recover from the problematic behaviors that are complicating their lives. When someone is in crisis, we have observed that they need a higher intensity of care than what weekly outpatient counseling can offer. In times of crisis, couples need more comprehensive, in-depth, stabilizing support. That is the structure and focus of this program; to help couples who are in distress establish stability and security so they can move forward with the restoration work that outpatient counseling provides.

If my spouse is the one with the problem, why do I need to participate?

When one partner is struggling with sexual desires and behaviors, both partners will experience pain as a result. The struggling partner will struggle with feelings of guilt, shame, remorse, fear, sadness, and confusion. Suicidal thoughts are not uncommon. The betrayed partner will experience feelings of betrayal, discouragement, confusion, anxiety, worry, and mistrust. Sexual betrayal is a trauma for the offender and the offended partner. For your relationship to recover, you will both need support and care. We will meet with you together initially and then with you separately. In these meetings we will discuss how this struggle has negatively affected you. We will help you recognize what is “normal” and you’ll hear from others who have experienced very similar things.

What if I need more help after the eight week program?

It’s wise to assume that everything won’t be perfect after eight weeks and there will be more work to do. Depending on the issues you are addressing, the length and intensity of recovery work will vary. If you feel that you need additional care after the eight week program, our team will help create an individualized plan that meets your specific needs.
